Jesus grows up in Nazareth

Ioseph, Mary and Jesus stayed in Egypt until the Judean king Herod died. After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel , for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."

So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel . But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth .

We do not know much about the life of Jesus in Nazareth . Joseph was a carpenter, and by helping his father, Jesus learned from him and became a carpenter himself. The Gospels do not tell us much of the time when Jesus was a boy and a teenager. But what we can read tells us a lot: "And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him." And in another place: "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men."

The Gospels also tell us that Jesus obeyed his parents. God wants all children to love their parents and to obey them. One of God's Ten Commandments also speaks about this: "Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you."
Matthew 2:19-23; Luke 2:40, 52; Exodus 20:12
