Jesus is arrested

Three times Jesus returned to the disciples, and each time he found that they were sleeping. When he returned the third time he said, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. He had agreed to betray Jesus for the price of thirty silver coins. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. Jesus replied, "Judas, my friend, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

Then Jesus turned to the officers of the temple guard, who had come together with Judas and asked, "Who is it you want?" "Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am he," Jesus said. When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.

Then Jesus asked, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour-when darkness reigns."

Then the soldiers arrested Jesus and took him to the house of the High Priest. But the disciples left him and ran away. Matthew 26:45-57; Luke 22:45-53; John 18:1-12.
